COURSE DIRECTOR : GEORGES VAN DEN ABEELE

Padi Instructor Development

IDC Course in Belgium - Lanzarote - Cyprus - Egypt a,d Turkey

To start this course you need to be a PADI Dive master or need to have a certification on leadership level from another organization (CMAS 3 star or a certification from another organization allowing you to organize and lead dives). If you do not yet have this certification, then you may qualify for an IDC Plus. If you have a higher certification you may not be required to do all the steps.

Instructor Development consists of  4 individual steps:
Step1

Individual (or guided) study. You work with the Instructor Candidate workbook and the PADI Instructor Manual (most recent edition) to get ready for the actual training. This step is required for all candidates,
including those who are allowed to skip the Assistant Instructor course.

Step 2

The Assistant Instructor course. In this part you learn the basis of teaching theory and skills and how to conduct open water training dives. Instructors from other organizations (those that are authorized to teach and certify divers) are not obliged (but recommended) to do this step. After successful completion of this step you can be certified as a PADI Assistant Instructor.

Step 3 The Open Water Scuba Instructor course. In this program you learn how to adapt the PADI system to your needs and the individual needs of your clients. Your teaching skills are developed beyond the basic level and you learn how to apply the PADI system, standards and procedures, to be ready to function as a PADI Instructor.
Step 4 The Instructor Examination (organized by and paid to PADI). An exam covering things from the Rescue Diver, Dive master, Assistant Instructor and OWSI programs. The exam is conducted by employees from PADI and is done at a neutral location near the dive centre.

Attention - every step in Instructor Development assumes that all previous steps in your diving career have been successfully completed and that your level of knowledge and skills is equal to, or better than the day you were certified. For those who are not sure of that, the dive centre IDS offering (or in some cases requiring) preparation programs.

An Instructor Development session at the dive centre IDS always has the same sequence and has a total of 16 days. You can attend the complete session, or only parts of it, depending on your experience and certification and depending how good you want to be prepared to pass the exam in the end.

Some steps are required, others are recommended.

The Instructor Development (ID) prep is a 2-day program in which we help you with problems you encountered during your self-study prior to the program and where we verify if your knowledge and skills of diving (from your Dive master course) are at the required level. Where this is needed we do remedial training. We recommend this option for everybody who is not completely sure to be well prepared before starting the actual 4-day AI course.

The OWSI prep serves two purposes. Those who did the AI course, but did not yet fulfil the performance requirements continue the AI program for one day with extra theory, pool or open water presentations as required. Those who already passed, have the option to do the Nitrox Instructor program that day. Those who were not required to complete the AI program, because they are instructors, or already did it before, can attend the program to be updated and as a refresher of they're previous training.

For those coming from another organization than PADI and those who did the old AI program, this day is required.

The IE prep is for those who did not yet pass the requirements of the OWSI program. Those who passed, have the option to do the EFR Instructor and the Oxygen First aid Instructor programs during those 2 days. This makes sure all can attend the same IE.
